This short talk will summarize the importance of ROS in our applied research at Fraunhofer Italia.
The spinning wheel of reinventions in robotic research motivated people a decade ago to invent the Robot Operating System (ROS). This collection of software-libraries, tools and state-of-the-art algorithms facilitates building robotic applications and brings a very strong open-source community with it. It did not take long until Industry and big robotic suppliers started to furnish their applications with ROS-capabilities and open drivers for ROS. Constantly trying to research on applied solutions for tomorrow, ROS has made it into the laboratories of Fraunhofer Italia. Based on two use-case examples, flexibility and robustness of this tool will be demonstrated.
