Laudatio SFS Award 2024
For anyone who grew up in Bolzano/Bozen, June marks the end of school – and the start of MiniBZ. A role game where childeren, between 7 to 14 can step into roles that make up a small, vibrant city. Since 1990, MiniBZ has drawn thousands of young participants, evolving over time to mirror changes in society and to inspire today’s children, the citizens of tomorrow.
In 2024, MiniBZ took a new step with the creation of a Media Center where children learn hands-on how technology works. The environment supports the understanding of technology, responsibility and respect for privacy – far away from the big data players. It also focuses on the reuse and recycling of technology to show the children the value of sustainability.
Almost 90 recycled computers – based on the open-source software FUSS 12 – were used at MiniBZ. On top of this, a dedicated volunteer developer created his own software. All of this provides the young MiniBZ participants with a secure, interconnected and, most importantly, sustainable digital world!
Thanks to the teamwork and all the volunteers, it is an honour for them to present the South Tyrol Free Software Award to Angelika Stueefer, (Director of VKE) with Franca Riesch De Pasquale (President) and a special recognition for the invaluable support of Mirko Frego and Christian Esposito.
